Tooth filling is something we do to resolve a cavity in a tooth. When there is a cavity, we remove that cavity and then we put a tooth filling in there to rebuild that tooth structure. So during the process of a tooth filling, we get you nice and comfortable.
We then remove the cavity and we use a composite material to fill the tooth and rebuild it. Composite fillings are a little different than amalgam fillings. One of the biggest differences is the color.
We use a white composite material that blends in with the tooth structure as opposed to the silver or dark looking amalgam or metal fillings. The amalgam fillings too have a tendency to expand and contract when they’re exposed to hot and cold and sometimes that expansion can cause cracks in the teeth, whereas the composite fillings don’t do that as much. Fillings do need to be replaced.
When you think about what you use your teeth for on a daily basis to crack, break, chew, grind things, and you throw bacteria in there in the mix, fillings do wear out over time and need to be replaced. We can help somebody replace a filling by first getting them nice and comfortable and then removing the old filling and any possible cavity that could be underneath it and then replacing it with a new filling that will help seal the tooth better.
