Gum Disease Leads To Tooth Loss

Gum disease can sneak up on you. It first appears when your gum tissue is infected by dangerous oral bacteria. More often than not, the condition announces itself with bleeding and swollen gums. This is often due to a lax or nonexistent oral hygiene routine, but some patients simply run a higher risk of getting gum disease because of their genetic makeup.

Regardless of how it takes hold, you will want to take it seriously because the swelling and bleeding won’t be the worst of it. Soon enough, this infection will make its way to the bone, causing the tooth roots to become loose. In fact, gum disease is the #1 factor in tooth loss among adults. Heart disease, diabetes, and other serious medical concerns have also been linked back to gum disease that has spread through a patient’s bloodstream.

We always stress the importance of early treatments around here, but this is especially true with gum disease. Many times, early stages of gum disease can be easily reversed with conservative measures. But the advanced stages of gum disease, known as periodontitis or periodontal disease, are not as curable. If it gets to that level you may need to enlist professional help every few months from here on out.

A New Treatment Strategy

If it turns out that you do have gum disease, we will work with you to remove the gum infection and restore the health of your mouth. Here’s how we do it: we use a high-tech laser that evaporates the infection. This is the modern method for treating gum disease. No scalpel, stitches, or long recovery period will be part of our plan for you.

Say Goodbye To Your Gummy Smile

Laser gum therapy also works well for problems like a gummy smile. Having too much gums over the teeth can be unseemly and can also lead to oral health problems. Getting rid of the gumminess will expose more of your healthy tooth and allow you to flash a more uniformed smile.

Repair Gum Recession

The opposite problem, having too little of the gum over the tooth, also detracts from your smile. Gum recession is sometimes the result of an untreated gum infection, but it can also stem from poor tooth positioning, accidental dental trauma, or any number of other occurrences.

Gum recession issues can be dealt with by our team by using something known as the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (please note that Dr. Daboul is the only doctor in our practice certified to perform this technique). We’ll explain it further when you are here for your consultation. The main thing to know is that this process is a huge step forward from traditional gum grafting, which is a process that requires scalpels, stitches, and a lengthy recovery period. So, think of it as the opposite of that when you visit our office for gum recession treatment. Unfortunately, the old way is still what you will get at many other dentists’ offices.
