It’s always a good idea to drink plenty of water, especially in the hot summer months. But plain water, not flavored water, is your best choice. Many brands of flavored water contain acids that have a negative impact on your smile.

As this video explains, many flavored waters, especially carbonated ones, have a pH level between 2 and 4. Unfortunately, a pH level of less than 5 can damage your tooth enamel. Over time, consuming these drinks weakens your enamel, making you more prone to dental decay. For comparison, the pH level of regular tap water is between 6 and 8.

You don’t have to completely eliminate flavored water. But it’s a good idea to drink it only occasionally. Make plain water your go-to drink, as it’s better for your smile. In addition, you can:

  • Drink flavored water with meals. You’ll produce saliva when eating, which helps counteract the beverage’s acidity.
  • Use a straw to lessen direct contact with your teeth.
  • Flavor your water yourself, with fresh herbs, berries, or melon
  • Consider getting fluoride treatment to strengthen your tooth enamel.
