The summer is running out fast, and now is the time to get your kids to the dentist before school starts again. Our Royal Oak dental practice is a leader in family dentistry, and we treat patients ages 3 and up! It’s not uncommon for us to treat entire families at our dental practice.

We often have families schedule their treatments all on one day to save themselves time and hassle. There is time to schedule a treatment before the school year kicks into full swing. North Oaks Dental has a number of ways to ensure that your child has a healthy a dazzling smile this year. Here are three specific ways our office can help your child this summer.

  • 1. Set Up Orthodontic Consultations

Millions of children will start orthodontic treatment this year. Orthodontic treatment can give your child a healthier and more beautiful smile. Few people are born with perfect teeth, and orthodontic treatment can straighten teeth while improving the bite and jawbone function. Straight teeth can give your child the confidence boost they need. The American Academy of Orthodontists recommends that your child have an orthodontic consultation at the age of 7. That is a great age because we can begin procedures that encourage the teeth to develop straight.

If we determine that your child can benefit from orthodontic treatment, you can start the process before school. That way they can get use to the treatment before they start school.

  • 2. Fit Your Child With a Custom Mouthguard

If your child is involved in high impact or contact sports, they need to be wearing a mouthguard. The American Dental Association recommends that children wear a mouthguard in just about every sport that involves a ball, hard object like a hockey puck, or even possible contact with other people. You can find a mouthguard at most drug stores and sports stores in America, but those basic boil-and-bite mouthguards are not uniform to your smile. A custom mouthguard will only fit one person’s mouth. We’ve found that the custom mouthguard will better protect the teeth.

You can even select a logo or a special color for the mouthguard.

  • 3. Bring Them to The Dentist

It’s important to bring your children to the dentist about once every six months for cleanings and exams. During those exams, we’ll review the health of your child’s teeth and can even provide a few preventive treatments like fluoride or dental sealants. Fluoride is proven to reduce the risk of tooth decay or even restore damaged enamel. Dental sealants, on the other hand, are placed on the biting surface and literally seal out harmful bacteria.

The summer is a convenient time to bring your child to the dentist because you can give them a clear bill of health before school starts. It’s estimated that children in America miss about 51 million hours of class instruction every year because of dental emergencies. If you’re bringing your children to the dentist and investing in preventive treatments, you can greatly reduce the likelihood that they’ll have a dental emergency.
